According to a popular Visayan legend, Bakunawa, the great sea serpent who swallows the moons, had a sister, a massive sea turtle. The turtle would come ashore to lay her eggs on an island, but each time she returned to the sea, the surrounding waters followed her, slowly causing the island to shrink. Fearing that their land would eventually disappear, the villagers killed the sea turtle. When Bakunawa learned of her sister’s death, she rose in fury from the ocean and swallowed the moons one by one, plunging the world into darkness. To stop her, the people beat pots and pans to create loud noise, forcing Bakunawa to release the moon back into the sky.
